This pick up technique is very simple and you should be able to weave it as soon as you mastered plain weave patterns. Make sure your salvages are nice and even, because the parts, where you pick up more than three or four threads need more attention than plain weave.
The threading chart for my example. Top row is heddled, bottom row is open.
Start with a couple of plain weave rows.
Make sure, you have got the right width and your band is even.
To start with the diamond, you will need to pick up the two threads in the middle of your band.
Count 8 threads from the left, pick up two and there will be 8 more threads to the right.
You can just pick up the blue threads from the bottom and the pattern will show up on the top, but I like a nice pattern on the back too. That is why you also need to drop a thread.
In order to drop threads, every open pattern thread (the blue ones) gets a „Partner“.
I found it very easy to partner a blue thread with its left hand neighbour like you can see in the picture.
It does not really matter, if you use the right or the left neighbour, but you should do it the same way every time. You will get used to it and at some point you will not need to think about it anymore.
Drop the black thread BEFORE the ninth blue
pattern thread.
After dropping a black thread, pick up the ninth blue
pattern thread (remember, I am counting from the left).
On my finger tip you can see the next black heddled thread. I drop it too, because it is the thread before the tenth blue pattern thread, that needs to be picked up.
This is, how it looks after dropping two black threads and picking up two blue ones.
Move your shuttle through and beat down the weft.
When all the blue paatern threads are on top, you just go through the shed with your shuttle. There is no pick or drop needed.
This is the completed diamond.
See this pick up chart, for which threads need to be picked up. Its to be read from bottom to top.

For the following patterns you will need 18 pattern threads. The numbers are for the threads you must pick up. There are no numbers for the threads you must drop.
The patterns are to be read from bottom to top!

For this pattern, you must not just pick, when all the pattern threads are on the bottom, you must also pick black threads, when all the pattern threads are on top. There is a pick and drop everytime you change sheds.
